Global Deaf Muslim USA
Grant Type: General Operating
Duration: January 1, 2021 - December 31, 2021
Global Deaf Muslim USA advocates and organizes for the advancement and inclusion of Deaf Muslims in American communities around the nation, raising awareness of the structural barriers Deaf Muslims face. Their work not only empowers Deaf Muslims to contribute to a just society, but it allows them to do so while retaining their identity and dignity.
In 2021, Global Deaf Muslim USA will continue its efforts to safely connect Deaf Muslim communities to help them thrive in the United States, recognizing the acute risks of isolation amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Online, they will continue to create and teach translations of words from Islamic practices into American Sign Language. This new vocabulary fundamentally supports the way Deaf Muslims are able to gather and build power, breaking down a language barrier that has prevented Deaf Muslims from fully participating in hearing Muslim communities nationwide. After thorough review, Global Deaf Muslim USA will begin to teach ASL translators this new vocabulary, building an online, visual dictionary for Deaf and hearing Muslims to access everywhere. Through Global Deaf Muslim USA’s trainings, ASL translators, imams, nonprofit leaders, and community leaders will be better equipped to translate and understand the needs of Deaf Muslims. In conjunction with their weekly classes, monthly gatherings, and yearly conferences, Global Deaf Muslim USA’s work is set up to build a new generation of leaders in our communities.
